EDO Combat Systems Purchases Frequency Devices' NEW 24-Channel Compact-PCI Analog to Digital Converter Board; EDO's Application Requires Ruggedized, Non-Aliasing ADC's with Very Tight Phase Match.

Haverhill, Mass. - Frequency Devices, Inc. (FDI) a leading supplier of precision analog and Digital signal processing (DSP) solutions for the data acquisition market, today announced that EDO Combat Systems a world class producer of command and control and underwater sensor technologies for the defense industry will purchase ruggedized 6U Compactpci analog-to-digital converter instruments for their new digital phase array sonar system.

Richard Krasinski, EDO's DSP System Engineer has been evaluating ways of reducing the size, weight and cost of their phase array sonar system utilizing Compact PCI and sigma delta analog-to-digital converters. Specific design objectives associated with this project included 1) tight channel-to-channel synchronization, 2) maximize channel density to reduce system size and weight and 3) critical environmental performance, specifically a ruggedized board design that would resist damage from temperature, shock, vibration and moisture.

Richard stated, "After an extensive search of manufacturers and available COTS (commercial-off-the-shelf) products, we selected FDI. FDI's technical merit was critical to achieving our design objectives. FDI's ability to define and understand the issues associated with integrating analog and digital signal processing into our design helped us identify significant specification and performance trade-offs while maintaining our design integrity. By incorporating precision anti-alias filters with each discrete sigma delta ADC, EDO was able to achieve leading edge signal precision while maintaining the tight channel-to-channel synchronization critical to the project."

Gregory T. Anderson, President of Frequency Devices stated "By combining EDO and FDI engineering resources, focusing on each engineering teams area of expertise, EDO has been able to significantly shorten the product development cycle for this program by allowing them to focus on the system development portion of the program while utilizing FDI's strength in precision signal processing. The combined resources will result in a small, more precise, lower cost solution with a significantly shorter development cycle."

Solution Summary

· Maximum card channel density with 24 discrete anti-alias filter and sigma delta ADC's per 6U Compact-PCI card, minimizes system board requirements.

· Meets environmental performance objectives of temperature, shock, vibration and moisture resistance, and

· Significantly shortens the system design and development cycle resulting in an overall lower cost solution.
